Advertising Disease

I just went onto Steve Pavlina’s site and noticed it has contracted a bad case of leprosy. The image shows the bacillus in pink and the reason I go to the site in gray:

Leprosy

I’m not attacking Steve personally. I don’t know him but he does seem to be a really nice guy with good intentions. I’m just surprised at this decision.

The worst of it is one of those super-saturated neon banners at the end of the post. I clicked it for fun. It leads to some piece of crap site claiming to sell you a fool-proof meditation system that will give you paranormal powers. I’m wondering how much the enlightenment package is!! I’m so glad that I can now buy a meditation ability, all this time I thought it was about patience, awareness, concentration and all that garbage!!

(If you want some really good instruction on meditation for free, go to AudioDharma.org)

Are you serious? Steve, do you really endorse this site? Is this an illustration of ’silent approval’?

Then there’s some computer hardware ads. I thought the site was about personal development, I guess that means finding great deals on computer parts!?

There have to be better solutions to monetizing a site because these are horrible.

So I don’t end on a bad note, I’ve been following the instructions from Steve’s posts about becoming an early riser this week. It’s only day four but it’s already becoming easier and the extra time I have in my day is already apparent. Thanks Steve!

derek

My name is Derek. This returned as a result of my name. I found it humorous.
I might make this a regular thing since I share a part of my identity (albeit superficially, then again what part of my identity isn’t superficial…that’s for another time) with all things labelled derek.

Becoming An Early Riser

Well it’s day 1 of Becoming An Early Riser, a relatively old post by Steve Pavlina. I’ve been kicking myself about my ill sleep habits for years and seeing this post (albeit late compared to everyone else) has really motivated me, so I’m doing it. The first day is certainly the hardest, like anything. I have resolved to keep this up for thirty days to see if I get the desired effect. The next step is to exercise and meditate in the morning. I’m looking forward to when this is habit but I’ve come to embrace the whole process of inducing radical change in my life, I’ve just had a 50/50 track record of keeping it up. I’m changing that.

OpenCourseWare

Related to my post about the movie teach and the future of education in general I have come across MIT’s very wonderful concept and website:

MIT OpenCourseWare

Naturally it is licensed with a Creative Commons License, because they know what’s up.

I am extremely excited about this. Now I just have to pick a course to take.

Ian's Shoelacing Site

I have a book of knots at home that I still haven’t gotten around to but this I’m able to apply right now! I absolutely love learning things for the sake of learning them. Here is a brilliant site with an endless amount of variations for tying and lacing your shoes. I can feel the neurons re-aligning and meeting new friends.

Unseen Video

Unseen Video

“The Unseen Video,
a weather controlled, dynamic music video for Mike Milosh’s - You Make Me Feel.

The Unseen Video is much more than a normal, static music video. It is a video that is affected by the weather and local time from the position of the viewer.

We want to create new synergies between the music, the video and the surroundings of the viewer. Every little change in your environment ensures that you will never see the same video twice. The look of the video might slightly change within an hour, but will have a whole new character in a few months.”

I like art. I like computers. I like computers and art.
